“My studio provides a space where I can dream, imagine, create. Seeing, hearing, reading—these inspire my work in ways that often surprise me. The simple tasks of daily life distill into works drawn on paper, stitched on fabric.”
Akiko Kotani’s art embodies the surprising power and attraction of simplicity. The diversity of her influences and her training comes together in her distinctive imagination, which enables her to create original works. With whatever materials and whether the images are playful, serene or serious, her work contains a depth of feeling within an economy of means.
Kotani’s work belongs in many private, corporate and museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It has been exhibited there as well as in many international venues that include the Kyoto Municipal Museum, Japan and the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio.
